According to Ayurveda the main reason behind the diabetes is Vayu. Usally diabetes happens during the later/senior stage of life when all the dhatus begin to weaken. . Around 3000 years ago, Acharyas Charak and Sushruta had discovered the symptoms of diabetes through their own methods, that due to exceeding blood sugar levels, the sugar was getting passed through the urine of the patients. And it is even a unique scientific method of estimating the blood sugar and urinary sugar that is given in the Charak Samhita and Sushruta Samhita. Acharya Sushruta explains that the colour of the urine of the patient with diabetes becomes honey. Similarly, Acharya Charaka tests the urine of a diabetic patient with ants.

Diabetes has been classified into three categories - Type 1 diabetes, Type 2 diabetes and gestational diabetes. Firstly, in Type 1 diabetes the body of the patient is unable to produce insulin, which makes it mandatory for the patient to inject insulin. In Type 2 diabetes, a serious condition occurs in which cells encounter insulin deficiency. The third type is the Gestational diabetes - a condition in which a pregnant female tends to develop a high level of blood glucose, which may further lead to the development of type 2 diabetes.

In Ayurveda, prameha (diabetes) is categorized into 4 major types (and total 21 types). Kapha type, which has 10 more sub-types, Pitta type, divided further into 6 sub-types, Vata type, with 4 sub-types and sahaja which corresponds to Type 1 diabetes. The Ayurvedic view brings out that disease occurs by an imbalance in these qualities (Vikruiti). To treat Type 2 diabetes, like all diseases in this method, it requires a restoration of balance (Prakruti) by detoxification of the body of the causative toxins that block circulation and cause the dosha imbalance, and interfering with the normal function of dhatu (tissue).

Diabetes is a disease that is observed to happen mostly in fat person as compare to lean, in mental workers in comparison with the manual labourers, in sedentary toilers, to those who sleep during the day, in those who take curds, meat, milk, cream, sweetmeats and heavy diets, to persons of medium age and old people (40-60 years). A strong history of diabetic parents and chronic alcoholics is definitely an evidence in the people with a high risk of diabetes. The earlier the better it is if diabetes is managed in its course. If diabetes is treated improperly, it can cause complications involving symptoms over the whole complete body in the long run.

Brain and Nerves: Strokes and neuritis.

Kidneys: Chronic renal failure.

Eyes: Premature cataracts and diabetic retinal involvement.

Skin: Recurrent skin infections.

Pregnancy: It might have detrimental effects on the mother as well as on the child.

Usually, when the patient is getting an Ayurvedic advice / Ayurvedic treatment for Type 1 diabetes or Ayurvedic treatment for type 2 diabetes, the complications of long standing of type 1 diabetes and type 2 diabetes become not so visible, which also varies because Ayurvedic treatment differs from person to person. At the beginning of the Ayurvedic treatment / Ayurvedic advice, medicine is prescribed on the basis of the person's capacity and criteria. After a thorough session of monitoring the blood sugar level, maximum dosage of the medicine is prescribed to bring the blood sugar level to normal levels.
