Australian Commercial Waste Scenario

Combatting waste is just as important as any other environmental endeavour you have undertaken. HIghlighting the importance of waste management is no more necessary as every educated person realises it.

In fact, most businesses are moving towards greener waste management practices. This doesn’t only help them fulfill their duties as part of our society, it helps them create a better image among their target groups. Australia generated about 17.13 million tonnes of commercial waste in 2012-13.

WHile most businesses are trying to be as responsible about waste management as possible, a large number of them are still under the impression that recycling costs more than simply dumping waste in a landfill. As a result of this, it is expected the cost of waste management for businesses will rise to 2%-3% in 2020 from the current 1%.

It is thus important for businesses to understand the importance and effectiveness of proactive waste management and actively participate in it. The only problem is, most businesses and people are not aware about the best practices of effective waste management. In fact, almost a third of Small and Medium Enterprises (SMEs) have stated that they do not record the amount of waste they produce and have no idea about how to treat it.

Here are a few easy steps you can incorporate to responsibly and efficiently treat the waste your business produces:

Measure your business waste. Don’t worry, you do not have to have an exact figure for the amount of waste, just go around your trash bins right before the garbage removal service arrives and get a rough idea of how much waste you have. For instance, a 200L trash bin is half full, and another 240L trash bin is totally packed, it means your business has produced about 240L of waste on that day.
Minimise the amount of waste you send to a landfill. This can be easily done by repurposing things that are still functional. Additionally, you can identify local collectors of recyclable items and have them remove these items from your trash before it goes to a landfill.
Make sure you have a reliable company or person picking up your waste on scheduled intervals of time. For instance, if your business is in Brisbane, you can contact a reliable Rubbish Remover in Brisbane.

Conclusion

Responsible waste management is our duty towards the mother nature that provides for us. The good news is, every day more people are becoming aware of responsible waste management and are actively becoming part of the movement. In fact, 14% of SMEs in Australia have stated that they are planning to implement a waste management and recycling policy in the coming years. What are you waiting for? Become a part of the responsible waste management movement and do your part in saving our precious environment.
