High winds are a weather phenomenon that inhabitants of Montrose Town-Genesee County grapple with all the time. Sometimes these winds are very high and cause great destruction in their wake. The winds of March 8th were incredibly gusty causing life to come to a standstill. The devastation that the winds left behind included debris flying from the landfills, power outages and much damage to the surrounding homes.

The Brent Run Landfill in Montrose is open from 7am-3pm on week days but it was forced to close at noon because of the strong winds. The wind was so strong that it blew debris from the landfill, resulting in litter for miles. Although officials put out a statement that the debris situation was being contained, it was an eye sore evident from different locations in town. Some of the garbage covered a field east of the landfill near a residential area while drivers on the highway had to fight off flying bags of trash. These bags were flying like missiles in the wind which was blowing above 50 miles per hours.

Apart from debris, power failures were also a major problem. Most inhabitants of Montrose Town had been warned about the possible blackouts but they didn’t expect the long wait before it could be re-established. This caused much discomfort as many people said it was incredibly cold and the whole situation was terrifying. The blackouts resulted from power poles pushed down by the winds. The power lines constituted a danger for drivers on the highways and people were warned to stay off the roads. Trees were equally uprooted across the roads causing more mobility issues. Some people had to resort to wood stoves and other manual means to stay warm. Schools like Gates Elementary were closed because of the severe weather.

The aftermath of the winds saw the roofs of some homes and establishments blown away along with some fire outbursts. A fire erupted in a private home but the Montrose firefighters were on standby to stop the flames from spreading. They were assisted by other firemen from Davison Township. This assistance was much needed because water hydrants were far from the waterside. Their valiant efforts saved the day.

The town of Montrose is recovering from the wind storm as people are coming out to lend a hand to cleanup and put things back together. People are also happy that the power has finally been restored and that the roads are now open. Severe weather comes and goes but communal spirits remain strong.
