Security News of January 2017

Posted by Orion Network Solutions on April 1st, 2017

Keeping your computer updated with the latest patches from Microsoft or Apple, Adobe, and Oracle is always good practice for your business. By downloading the latest updates, you can keep your system secure and protected from attackers and data loss. Here is an overview of the most crucial updates released in January 2017:

Microsoft and Adobe

Four security bulletins were released by Microsoft on ‘Patch Tuesday’, January 10, 2017, two of which are rated critical and should be installed as soon as possible. The updates included fixes for 15 vulnerabilities, 12 of which stemmed from Adobe Flash, and three affecting native Microsoft products. There were no quality improvements and security fixes for Windows Server 2012 R2 and Window 8.1, so there were no Security Monthly Quality Rollup or Security Only Quality Update release. Apart from security updates, Microsoft provided cumulative updates for Window 10.

MS17-003 is a critical update for Adobe Flash Player. It resolves the vulnerabilities of the player on all supported editions of Windows 10, Windows Server 2016, Windows RT 8.1, Windows Server 2012 R2, Windows 8.1, and Windows Server 2012, and it updates affected Flash libraries in Microsoft Edge and Internet Explorer 11 and 10.

The security update for Microsoft Office is rated ‘Critical’. MS17-002 update resolves the vulnerability that enables remote code execution, which activates when you open a specially crafted MS Office file. Once the attacker has access of your system, it can run an arbitrary code using your identity.

Oracle

Oracle released a collection of patches to address multiple security vulnerabilities. Its January 2017 critical patch update contained 270 security fixes across different product families, including Oracle Database Server, Jdeveloper, Tuxedo, Spatial, Communications Networking Intelligence, Java SE, Primavera, Solaris, MySQL, and FLEXCUBE. Oracle recommends applying all relevant security fixes as soon as you can.

Apple

iOS has been updated with the latest version, 10.2.1, released on January 23. Most updates for iOS cover security fixes of different severity, and the latest comes with protection against a range of potentially harmful attacks. Apple detailed more than 12 vulnerabilities in the latest release, including those that are focused on Safari, WebKit, the AppStore, and many other iOS apps. The updates included fixes addressing a malicious application, which can execute an arbitrary code with kernel privilege to let the attacker gain full control of the device.
