What is battery management system?

Battery management system involves various functions of battery.  Various functions of battery are depends upon battery maintenance.  Optimum level of functional ability is attained when they are maintained properly.  The important function pre-charge and discharge and allowing the system to get connected with the different loads, and it also removes the overloading of load capacitors.  The need of maintenance is to protect the system against it operating outside the zone, which is known as safe operating zone.  Some of them are mentioned below

Based on the capability of charging and discharging mode over-current protection

During charging it is necessary to protect the system against high voltage

Based on different types of battery system under voltage or low voltage protection is also very important.

Protection against high temperature and low temperature, even though both have different effects on the system, both have disruptive influence on the working efficiency of battery system.

One of the most important functions of it is to detect the grounding fault or leakage of current.

The protection against all conditions mentioned above is provided by an internal switch, which usually includes a relay or solid state device.  Based on the type of operation the switch acts as an opener when the system is operated outside the safety zone.

In general, a battery management system is built with three components and they are data bus for external communication and a smart battery pack that is usually connected with the smart charger.

There is a wide range of battery system and they manufactured according to the end use.  Therefore construction of the system also varies widely.  In general, one can say a battery management system is an electronic system involved a rechargeable battery.  It protects the entire set up against operating outside the safety zone.  It will also monitor the data by using secondary data and using the reporting data it will control the entire environment either by authenticating it or by balancing it.

Today the electronic industry has developed by heaps and bounds and each and every industry has its own requirements.  But one thing remains common in every industry that is battery system.  External battery management system is very common and companies hire regular service providers.  Though there are many types of system the architecture is very simple to explain for a common man.  One can say it consists many blocks that are functional that includes cutoff field effect transmitters, fuel gauge monitor and voltage monitor, and voltage balance, real time clock adjuster, and more importantly it has also temperature monitor.

The designing of battery management system is catching up with the new comers.  The architecture though very simple as explained above, it demands a thorough understanding of different components used in the system.  It involves lot of effort to organize and customize the system as per the client’s requirements.  Most of the functional blocks are organized in such a way that targeted results are easy to achieve.  The ability or efficiency of the system or architecture is based on its algorithm.
