Jobs on the road are increasingly becoming promising with the rise of road transport and the dependence of people on it. The road transport system is getting stronger by the day and it employs a heavy force of drivers to meet the increasing needs. There are a variety of jobs in the trucking industry, some are specialized and some are common driving jobs. The monetary earning in this field, like all fields, is proportional to the kind of specialization one holds. Here’s a look at the different kinds of driving positions on offer in the market :

Specialized Trucking: The giant trucks carrying, handling or hauling large load of goods or machines are all specialized trucks that require special driving skills. These kinds of trucks are designed to carry or handle over-sized and sensitive loads that need utmost care while carrying them from one place to another. Auto carriers, dry bulk carriers, over sized and overweight loads, or double and triple trailers are all general examples of specialized trucking.

Over the road drivers: As the name suggests, over the road drivers spend most of their time on the road carrying heavy goods, driving for long hours either interstate or intrastate. These drivers are away from home for around 2-5 weeks depending upon the distance they are covering.

Pick-up and delivery (P&D): This trucking job requires the drivers to make quick a run, mostly within a city working in route sales and pick-up and delivery operations. In some cases, over the road drivers are needed to contact the customers on the roads to make sales pitch and hence, require sales skills too.

Owner operated: Owner operated driving is when the driver owns his/her own vehicle or equipment and runs rentals. Also, they haul freight on a contractual basis. Here the competition is high as the input that goes into maintaining a vehicle is high which includes overhead expenses like equipment purchase, maintenance, fuel, and insurance.

Freight haulers: One of the most common driving jobs in the industry today. It is simple hauling cargo on the road from one place to another. It doesn’t include any complications and requires basic driving skills to carry load of goods.

In the digital age, it has become much easier to find job as a truck driver. There are a lot of online portals that help you find the specific job with a simple resume upload and an online search. Different driving jobs require different kinds of skills and the online job offers are segregated into different categories based on the skills.
