BLEISURE TRAVEL: CONCEPT OVERVIEW & ANALYSIS

Posted by Divakar on April 14th, 2017

Bleisure travel also known as bizcation or workcation is the new buzzword for travellers who combine their business travel with leisure trips. It is blurring the lines between business travel and leisure travel. Bleisure travel makes the stress of business travel more bearable and gives employees a better understanding of the city and culture they are working in. Spending more time in a country which employees are visiting for business purposes provides them with a chance to relax and enjoy the local sights. Extended duration of a trip for an employee can save a company’s money by avoiding peak time fares on popular routes. Further, many of the airlines offer discounted rates for weeklong trips, which makes it cost-effective for companies to keep employees on business travel for a slightly long duration.

BLEISURE TRAVEL: ANALYSIS

There is a rise in bleisure travel amongst corporate travellers because it is cost-effective. In such travel, the cost of flights, train or bus tickets is the same for the company but the cost of accommodation for an extended number of days is more. More often, employees will pay an extra amount for their extended accommodation themselves, if the organisation is not providing extended stay. Corporate travellers call their spouses and children to the destination to convert their bleisure travel into a family trip. Longer business trips are more likely to become bleisure trips, as employees add some more days in already long trips. Bleisure travel is a solution to the problem of retention of millennials, whose attrition rate is high. Millennial bleisure travellers are more likely to turn an evening into a business opportunity. They combine work and leisure at higher rates because they travel the least.

Not all the business trips fit the leisure profile, only 7% of the total business trips fit the bleisure profile as per the Harvard Business Review. 82% of the more than 7,000 current and potential meeting attendees surveyed by the “The Decision to Attend Study-Phase One”, admitted that the destination is a key factor that influences their decision to go for a business meeting.

BLEISURE TRAVEL: OUTLOOK

Bleisure travel provides a clear growth opportunity for hotels, motels and travel agencies. Aspen, Caicos, Hawaii, Miami and Turks are the hottest bleisure travel destinations. Bleisure travel is one of the strategies employed by companies to engage, motivate and retain employees and it is mutually benefitting for employees as well as employers. There is an increase in the amendment of business travel policies by many companies and they have started including bleisure travel into it. Bleisure travel is a business opportunity for independent hotels as well as the chain of hotels because of growing number of corporate travellers opting for an extended stay.
