Dust Suppression - A Chemical Solution with Various Applications

Dust and its airborne particulates pose serious issues for businesses as well as the environment. Thankfully, a variety of dust suppression solutions are now available for a variety of applications. They generally entail the use of an additive chemical, resin, or a solution that can be mixed with water or even applied directly to the ground to help prevent the degradation of dirt roads, or to prevent erosion where the maintenance of soil integrity is needed.

There are a number of different types and approaches depending on the intended use of these chemical solutions, but they all help with the following:

• Dust suppression by binding dust particles together, thus preventing them from becoming airborne
• Maintaining the integrity of the road by preventing fine particle loss and keeping the road surface free from potholes, ruts and washboards

A commonly used dust suppression solution uses magnesium chloride, a hygroscopic compound which attracts moisture from the air. It is mixed with water before application at the rate of approximately 1:3. Being resistant to evaporation, its effects last longer. By keeping the applied surface damp, the dust particles are bound together, preventing erosion and air borne pollution.

A resin-modified emulsion provides a very durable treatment specially made for unpaved roads. They are made from tree resins, making them environmentally safe. They work not only as a dust suppression agent—they also maintain the integrity of the road surface. Multiple applications of the product over time have a cumulative effect and can extend the lifespan of the surface.

The products can be freeze conditioned for very cold seasons, remaining effective to -30 degrees Celsius. They are non-corrosive and contain minimal amounts of salt compounds and are bio-degradable.

Using environmentally friendly products on roadways, especially near wetlands or other sensitive areas, protects the adjacent vegetation and animal life, maintaining a healthy environment.
