Natural treatments for mastitis in women

Mastitis is inflammation of breast tissue usually due to infection which is the most common pathogen is Staphylococcus aureus. This bacteria normally live in the human’s skin, nose, and respiratory tract. The problem occurs when the bacteria coming from the infants’ mouth go into the milk duct through breast lesions or milk ducts blocking causing lactation mastitis. So it commonly occurs with breastfeeding women in the first three months after giving birth or even during all breastfeeding periods. However, women from 20 to 49 years old or after menopause can undergo this problem as well.

 The signs and symptoms usually appear suddenly, can develop quickly without any warning and include:

•Breast tenderness or warmth when touch.

•Pain or burning sensation.

•Skin redness and swelling in the breast.

•General malaise or tired.

•Other symptoms are chills, fever or even discharge from the nipple.

In lactation mastitis, it is essential to continue breastfeeding except noticed any discharge with blood or yellow color. With this situation, using of pumps or hand- compressing to empty the breast help prevent milk duct from blocking.

  A woman should visit a doctor if symptoms are prolonged, severe pain affects her daily life. In addition, here are home remedies for mastitis that you should not ignore:

1.Massage therapy

The most convenient and simplest home remedy for mastitis is massage using both two hands with appropriate force. This may aid unblocking the ducts and reduce swollen, is a wonderful, stress-relieving, detoxifying practice for the whole body.

·         Apply special breast massage cream or apricot or olive oil to the breasts and underarms.

·         Crouching one hand above the breast so that your fingertips can go under the arm, gently press this area using a rhythmic motion.

·         Then move your hand go down to the top part of your breast in a rhythmic way, continue press these areas by rotating around in a spiral shape, then circling the nipple, and back to the underarm.

·         Practice this procedure five to ten minutes per breast, three to four times a week until noticed swollen reduced.

2.Hot and cold water compression

 For light lactation mastitis, application of hot massage can help unblock the plugged milk ducts and relieve swelling. However, in severe mastitis, heat or massage could make the symptoms get worse and cold compresses are more appropriate to reduce the inflammation.

·         Soak a towel in hot water then apply over the painful area for 15-30 minutes, soak this towel with hot water again whenever it get cool. With cold compress, you can wrap a few ice cubes in a hand towel.

·         Cupping one hand and apply its fingers to massage your breast while other hand put on the opposite side of your breast to support.

·         Remember you should do this remedy in circle motion follow the clockwise, repeat it whenever you feel pain or uncomfortable.

3.Garlic

  Garlic – the world’s healthiest food. The anti-fungal effect and boosting immune system effect of the garlic are clearly known for a long time so it is the good home remedies for mastitis in women.

    ·         Chew 2-3 raw garlic cloves help to fight the infection. If can not take fresh garlic, garlic capsules or tablets are the good choices for you.

4.Aloe Vera

 Aloe vera is used in traditional herbal medicine as a skin treatment, helps soothing, moisturizing, and healing the burning skin. It also effects on the damage or even infected skin, relieves pain.

·         Wash the damaged skin with warm water

·         Extract some aloe vera gel from the leaves.

·         Put the gel on the wound areas and let it dry by itself.

·         Then wash it again with warm water, repeat it 2-3 times daily for 2-3 weeks.

5.Foods rich in Vitamin C

  Vitamin c has perfect effects on producing collagen- the main protein of body’s structure, supports healing wounds, antioxidant and boosting the body immune system. Consume vitamin c every day will help you fight breast infection and decrease the risk of many diseases. Many fruits and vegetables are rich in vitamin C like lemon, berries, broccoli, fruit kiwi, apples, cabbage, kale, spinach, potatoes, and tomatoes...

·         Consume vitamin C daily through food is the best choice for you.

Otherwise, vitamin C supplement until the infections was gone.
