Football Excellence: Home Field at Westlake High School

Posted by Brian Talley on May 3rd, 2017

Westlake High School in Westlake Hills, Texas is home to one of the elite high school football programs in the Austin metropolitan area, a program so highly regarded that parents of aspiring young football players have been known to search Westlake Hills for homes for sale in order to get their students into the Eanes Independent School District, and for good reason. Many former Westlake players have left home and gone on to play Division 1 football, and a few have advanced to play at the highest level in the National Football League. The Chaparrals make their home at Chaparral Stadium at Ebbie Neptune Field, which holds 10,000 people and is located on the campus of Westlake High.

As the Chaparrals begin to prepare for the 2017 season, they will look to build on a very successful 2016 campaign, one that ended with a loss in round eight in the 64-team state tournament. This state loss was to area rival Lake Travis High, a team that also beat them handily in the regular season, but it can be taken as some consolation that Westlake lost to the eventual champions, as Lake Travis went on to win the state title. The Chaparrals would lose only one other game in 2016, an early season home loss to out of state visitors, Liberty High School from Las Vegas, Nevada. Westlake ended the season 11-3, and ended up ranked 29th out of 246 Division 6A teams.

Defense was the strength of Westlake High in 2016, and the defense hopes to continue to impress despite losing standout senior outside linebacker Levi Jones, who will attend USC in the fall, and will be anchored for 2017 by inside linebacker, junior David Dickerson. Where Westlake will need to improve is on offense, which compared unfavorably with those of other high ranking teams. Sophomore Taylor Anderson looks to take over at quarterback for departing senior Sam Ehlinger after getting some valuable experience filling in for a few games for Ehlinger in 2016. But this offense will ride the wide shoulders of junior running back Nakia Watson, coming off of a spectacular 2016 season in which he ran wild for 1,648 yards and 22 touchdowns. If Watson manages to improve on that performance, the sky is the limit for his football future and the Westlake High Chaparral’s season.
