There are many non-religious and non-political organizations that propagate a certain set of moral values. Freemasonry is one of the world’s oldest and largest organizations which believes in the betterment of society. It consists of fraternal organizations that originated from the local fraternities of stonemasons.  The Freemasonry history dates back to 1390 when the oldest documents making references to Masons were written.

Freemasonry is a society of men who hold high regards for moral and spiritual values. Since the roots of Freemasonry lie in the traditions and ceremonies of the medieval stonemasons who primarily built cathedrals and castles, the language and symbols mostly come from this era. Freemasonry mainly evolved in three stages:
Emergence of organized lodges of operative masons during the Middle Ages
The admission of members as “accepted” masons
Evolution of more developed Masonic lodges and emergence of Grand Lodges

There were three basic types of lodges - Blue lodges, craft lodges or ancient craft lodges. These lodges are believed to work on the first three Masonic degrees rather than appendant Masonic orders such as York Rite and Scottish Rite.

Over the centuries, Freemasonry has developed widely in its principles and lodges focusing on self-improvement, social betterment, nobility of deeds and individual improvement. Freemasonry doesn’t stress on a particular religion or God, it believes in equal rights for men, liberty to choose whom to worship and all-round development of society in terms of education and values.

The five main principles that Freemasonry spreads are integrity, kindness, honesty, fairness and tolerance. Our thoughts and deeds must be integrated and we should say what we mean. We should actively participate in charity work to help those who are needy. Family always comes first, but those who don’t have someone around must also be approached and helped out. We must be transparent in our activities and don’t cover up the mistakes. Freemasonry is about being honest and instructing honesty. Freemasonry believes in equality of all men and expects the Masons to treat everyone equally. Tolerance is about listening to everyone and valuing the important thoughts and actions that add value to our lives.

Currently, the Masonic fraternity continues to do charitable work by giving millions of dollars each day to causes that range from operating children’s hospitals, helping the poor and feeding the homeless to providing medical help to the needy and so on.
