Organ transplantation is basically a process of transferring a donated organ surgically to someone diagnosed with organ failure. Well, many diseases can lead to organ failure, such as diabetes, heart disease, cystic fibrosis, hepatitis and cirrhosis. Also, birth defects and injury may cause organ failure. During organ transplantation (living donor & cadaver), doctor removes an organ from another person and places it inside your body. The organ may come from a living donor or a person who has died.

Different types of Organ Transplant Donations: Basically, there are two types of organ transplant donations which are done at the best multi-organ transplant hospitals in India.

1-Living organ Transplant: This is done when a living person decides to donate his/her body organ to someone in need of a transplant. Living donors are usually close friends of the person or family members who require a transplant. Also, they undergo comprehensive medical testing before being accepted as suitable donors.

2-Deceased Donor Transplant: This is done when organs from a brain dead person are transplanted into the body of the living recipient. In this scenario, the deceased individual can only be a victim of brain death. This type of transplant requires the recipient to wait until a suitable organ is available that matches with the profile of the recipient.

Mentioned below are the organ transplantation procedures that have been successfully conducted so far:

  • Liver Transplant: In adults, the most common reason for liver transplant is cirrhosis. This is a disease in which healthy liver cells are damaged. Other conditions that cause cirrhosis are some metabolic diseases or congenital diseases. There are different sources of liver donors. Usually, the liver is obtained from a cadaveric donor, a brain dead person whose other systems and organs are working properly. There are hundreds of people who die every year while waiting for a cadaveric liver to be offered. Liver donor can also be obtained from a family member or friend, who is willing to donate his/her liver.
  • Kidney Transplant: Kidney transplant is the best treatment for patients suffering from chronic kidney failure. Patients who have lost 80% of their kidney functions need hemodialysis to survive. Dialysis provides life support to many patients although, it might cause many other problems. Thus, kidney transplant is the best solution for it. This improves the quality of life of the patient by ensuring that it functions properly. There are two types of kidney donor: living donor (from a family member) and cadaveric donor (a person diagnosed as brain dead).

Over and all, our country has witnessed a lot of growth in the field of medical world. Hence, there are many state-of-the-art hospitals, such as Apollo Hospitals that features top experts in the area of organ transplantation; it is rated as one of the best multi-organ transplant hospitals in India.
