Cleaning of fuel storage tanks is essential for the safe storage of fuels and to ensure the longevity of the tanks. Other reasons include a change in the fuel type and conducting the required repair work.

Accumulation of fuel residue, sediments and moisture start accelerating if the tank is not cleaned for a longer than recommended period of time. Accumulated moisture can harm the tank through rusting and sediments can easily degrade the quality of fuel. In the worst case scenario, filth in the tank can also cause fire leading to the risk of loss of property and life.

Hence, it is extremely important to clean the fuel storage tank at frequent intervals. The time interval of fuel storage tank cleaning solely depends upon the kind of fuel being stored in it. It may also depend on the age of the tank and the amount of fuel being stored in it. For instance, larger tanks may require more frequent cleaning than smaller tanks.

It is essential to keep checking the fuel tank for any possible contamination  on a regular basis. Water is the most common contaminant which is found in a fuel tank. It can damage the container and degrade the quality of the fuel to almost harmful levels. It is recommended to do a thorough inspection at least once a month.

Apart from monitoring through a water detecting system, it is advisable to conduct a stick and water finding paste test regularly to gauge the exact condition. Maintenance should also be carried out based on the kind of fuel stored in the tank.

For instance, if there is diesel in the tank, precautions like checking the insulation of the tank to regulate its temperature, routine discharge of water from the bottom and running the fuel through water separator is essential. It also helps in maintaining the health of the tank in an efficient way.

Fuel storage tank cleaning is not similar to any other kind of tank cleaning. It can cause health hazards like skin diseases and lung problems. That is why it is imperative to take all the required precautions to clean the tank safely.

Wear a protective suit and a full face gas proof mask before you step inside the tank to stay safe from harmful gases and contaminants. And if there is any spillage outside the tank, use oil spill cleanup products to eliminate the chances of fire. Apart from cleaning the tank properly, look out for any signs of rust and damage to ensure timely repair or replacement of the tank.
