Disaster Recovery Solutions

Your organization’s data security policy is not complete without a disaster recovery (DR) solution, which aims to protect your organization from the consequences of negative events. Disasters can be anything that can put your operations at risk, and these can include equipment failures, natural disasters, and cyber attacks. The objective of DR is to make sure your organization can continue functioning as normally as possible in the event of a disaster. Likewise, it ensures you can resume mission-critical operations quickly after a disaster. Hence, the absence of a disaster recovery plan could result in costly losses, downtime, delays, and loss of productivity.

Disaster recovery includes the processes of planning and testing. It may include another physical site, which can help restore operations as quickly as possible, too. DR will help secure your data and prevent loss due to theft, computer crashes, or corruption of the storage device, among other causes. These are some of the reasons why you need DR as part of your data security policy, as any disaster can cause a lot of devastating effects on your organization—including failure and breaches in security and safety of their own clients and staff.

As organizations place more importance on availability, they have a growing need to keep their systems up and running at all times. Downtime is no longer highly tolerated. RPO (recovery point objective) and RTO (recovery time objective) are crucial standards in downtime and disaster recovery. The latter is the maximum amount of time for the organization to recover data from backup storage and continue to operate normally, and the former pertains to the maximum age of data that the organization must recover from its backup storage to resume normal operations after the disaster.

If your RTO is two hours, downtime should not exceed that limit. RPO determines the minimum frequency for backing up. So, if you decide on six hours, then system backups must be performed at least every six hours. To meet the demands of your RTO and RPO, make sure that you have multiple data storage solutions you can access easily. These may include having a reliable cloud storage platform, a recovery-in-place method for quicker data restoration.
