Carboxymethyl cellulose (CMC) is generally synthesized by alkalization reaction of cellulose with alkali followed by etherification reaction of alkali cellulose with monochloro acetic acid (MCA). Carboxymethyl cellulose is commonly used as sodium salt (NaCMC) in the market. Carboxymethyl cellulose is white or slightly yellowish fibrous compound, which is odorless, tasteless, and non-toxic in nature.
