July Fourth is a time for all to celebrate, but each of us have different abilities to tolerate the flash and bang of Independence Day. If you’re throwing a party, consider your guests with developmental disabilities and sensitivity to too much stimuli.

Here are a few tips so that all your guests feel included:

  • Before the party, ask caregivers and families about diet concerns that address not only typical food allergies but also sensitivity to food textures.
  • Separate into side dishes a portion of the meal before you add final seasoning. Some guests can’t tolerate a lot of spice.
  • Provide a tented or shaded area. Some guests may have trouble regulating their body temperature.
  • Provide extra sunscreen. Some medications can make the user particular vulnerable to sunburn.
  • Print Fourth of July pictures from a coloring book for guests who prefer to be included in the holiday in quieter ways.
  • Set aside a quiet room for those who might need a quiet break from the activities.
  • Offer sunglasses and noise-cancelling earplugs or headphones to lessen stimulation from fireworks, and offer gloves for fun with sparklers.
  • Be extra vigilante about safety concerns. Some guests who may not be able to fully understand the dangers of a grill or fireworks.

Of course, all guests are different and this isn’t an all-inclusive list. But with a little thought beforehand, you can throw the type of party that’s fun for all.
