What Is a Platform Bed& Why Do I Want One?

Because You Don’t Need a Box-spring

Platform beds are made with all natural ingredients, and box-springs are constructed with a lot of toxic materials that will ultimately pollute the environment one way or another. So, platform beds use wooden slats or Tatami straw mats to support mattresses, which are also made from natural materials, such as cotton futons or latex mattresses. What this also means is that by sleeping on a platform bed, you are also being ecologically and socially conscious, which is essential at this time in history. In addition to non-eco-friendly box-springs, conventional beds, of course, come with mattresses that are also produced with toxic materials, which harm the environment to one degree or another, once they lose their usefulness and are then thrown away. At any rate, it’s vitally important to understand the differences between a box-spring bed and a platform bed .

Because They’re Durable

Platform beds are constructed from natural, solid hardwoods like mahogany, oak, cherry, and, although it’s not technically a type of wood but a form of grass, bamboo. These hardwoods last a very long time, as long as they’re not subjected to blatant abuse. Using natural wood is also eco-friendly because if these bed-frames ever did get destroyed somehow, they would biodegrade quickly. As far as assembly is concerned, most platform beds have ingenious designs, using parts such as dowels, unusual bolts and sturdy locking systems that make it difficult to break the joints. The bed frame’s support system for the slats and mats is strong and prevents any shifting on the part of the slats and mats. Most platform beds either have thick legs made of solid wood or no legs at all with the frame itself simply resting on the floor, which is the ultimate support because it relies on less joints to stress.

Because They’re Lovely

All you have to do is take one close look at any platform bed made of bamboo to fall in love with its natural beauty and other-worldly allure. Cherry wood is also exceptional, as is mahogany, but, of course, all woods are beautiful to one degree or another. However, the beauty of a platform bed goes way beyond the type of wood used; the design also counts for a lot, perhaps more. And the nice thing about platform beds is that they inspire creative design and construction, which results in a plethora of designs to choose from, too many to list here, especially since designs vary radically from company to company and country to country. For example, modern style platform beds can come with drawers for storage and they can come with canopies to protect you from the rain and snow. So, when you do more research on what kind of platform bed to purchase, begin with an exploration of its history, which you should find fascinating.
