The Power of Music: Showing Noticeable Changes in Alzheimer?s Care

Everyone has that one song that automatically lifts their spirits once they hear it. Music is powerful—so much so, in fact, that it shows noticeable changes in those affected with Alzheimer’s, according to studies. Music is a universal language that evokes reactions. Because humans connect emotions to songs, music can trigger memories. This is why music—particularly singing—can unlock memories that are stored deep within the brain.

Did you know that appreciation for music and musical aptitude are some of the last few abilities that remain in people with Alzheimer’s? This is not surprising. After all, the auditory system is the first to fully develop and function in humans—and it is also the last to go. Mothers often sing and talk to their babies even while they are still inside their stomachs. The auditory system is also the last to shut down when a person dies, which is why listening is literally the first and last thing humans do.

Playing the right type of music for Alzheimer’s patients can help slow down memory loss. Any song can trigger the grey matter in the brain, especially a familiar tune from a patient’s young adult years. Their favorite songs when they were 18 to 25 years old are most likely to bring out a strong response.

Music has also been shown to assists in managing the stress levels in Alzheimer’s patients. By kick-starting their mind, songs can help improve their motor and cognitive function, especially since responding to rhythm and music requires very little mental effort. Even unfamiliar music can be beneficial for those with Alzheimer’s because it helps them develop new responses. It also aids in relaxation and sleep.

While there is no cure yet for Alzheimer’s, continuing research indicates that there is reason to be hopeful, and that new breakthroughs are in the pipeline. But for now, small efforts such as singing to the patients and playing their favorite song can make a huge difference in their lives. It may not be a cure, but it does make an impact. Sing to those with Alzheimer’s and help make their lives better.
