JoSAA stands for Joint Seat Allocation Authority. It is an agency that is established by the Ministry of Human Resource Development (MHRD) in 2016 to manage and regulate the admissions into 92 technical institutions which are administered by Government of India. JoSAA managed allocation of seats for admission to Indian Institutes of Technology (IIT), National Institutes of Technology (NIT), Indian Institutes of Information Technology (IIIT) and Government Funded Technical Institutes (GFTI) in 2016-2017.  This year JoSAA will be handling admissions into 97 institutes which include 23 IITs, 31 NITs, 23 IIITs and 20 Other-Government Funded Technical Institutes (Other-GFTIs).

JoSAA commenced this year’s admission process from June 15 by opening the portal of online registration and choice filling. JoSAA 2017 will conduct joint counseling to students qualifying JEE Mains 2017 and JEE Advanced 2017. Registration for JoSAA can be done by entering the JEE Main 2017 roll number, password and security pin. If the candidates have registered for JEE Advanced, then they will have to use their JEE Advanced password. (Candidates who didn’t appear in JEE Advanced are not eligible for seats in IITs) After registering for JoSAA 2017, candidates have to enter their choices of courses and institutes by June 26 which is the last date to register and fill the choices.

Registration Rules:-

  • Candidates who do not register within the specified time limit will not be able to take admission through JoSAA this academic year. Further Candidates who do not fill their choices within the specified time window will not be able to seek admission through JoSAA.
  • Candidates have to fill their choices of Institutes and branches in decreasing order of their preference. Candidates should fill-in as many choices as possible. (This would increase their chances of getting a college)
  • Candidates must ‘lock’ their choices. Candidates who do not lock their choices, their last saved choices will be locked automatically when the time-window for filling-in of choices closes.
  • JoSAA will be conducting seven rounds of seat allocation for academic programs offered by Institutions offered by JoSAA.
  • A candidate, who has already accepted a seat, can withdraw the seat by reporting at a reporting center before the seventh round of seat allocation.
  • Candidates allotted a seat must pay the seat acceptance fee for provisional seat acceptance.
  • A candidate is required to fill option for ‘freeze’, ‘slide’ or ‘float’ the choice of academic program.

If in a subsequent round, a candidate’s allotment from NIT+ system changes to an IIT, the candidate MUST report ONCE AGAIN at an IIT reporting centre, similarly if a candidate’s allotment from IIT changes to an NIT+ system, the candidate MUST report ONCE AGAIN at any NIT+ reporting centre, failure to do so will result in forfeiture of seats allocated in both NIT+ system and IIT.
