What are Lesser Rifts and Greater Rifts respectively?

Diablo 3 players should be intimately familiar with Lesser and Greater Rifts which send players into randomly generated locations with tiered difficulty.?
Usually two items will grant entry to Lesser and Greater Rifts. One is Depleted Riftstone which allows entry into Lesser Rifts. And another one is Charged Riftstone which allows entry into Lesser Rifts and Greater Rifts.

Depleted Riftstone & Charged Riftstone

It seems that those riftstones function similar to the mythic keystones which allow players to run timed dungeons on scaling difficulties. Depleted Riftstone can be upgraded to Charged Riftstone, probably if you beat the timer in a Lesser Rift. And vice versa, if you don't beat a Greater Rift timer, Charged Riftstone may be downgraded into Depleted Riftstone.
