How to Use an Overlocker with the help of a Sewing Machine

Sewing machine is used for sewing or stitching clothes. There are many types of stitches, one of them is overlock. This is a kind of stitch which plays the role of an edge to the cloth or two or more cloths. The name has the secret in it. It is ‘over-lock’. It is called as overlock, because sew is over the edge of the cloth. An overlock is used for hemming or seaming also. It is made with the help of cutters, but sometimes it can be made with it also.  It has many uses of creating frills, decorating, etc.

Let us see how an overlock stitch is formed as it looks like a little twisted petal of a flower. It adds a lot of beauty to the cloth. It is evergreen. I cannot remind the time when it went completely out of the fashion industry. It is present in all the seasons in different designs. You may be wondering the need to know overlocking. Well, the answer is simple, why not to try some creativity in fashion designing as well after cookery and other household chores.

We will try our best to create the overlocks similar to Husqvarna overlockers. The needle’s job is to enter the cloth and it does not pass through it because of a loop of thread tied at the end. The needle makes a makes a downward movement and the lower looper moves from left to right. So, there is one deliberate movement and the other is resulting.

Now the needle has a path and the tip of the lower looper has to pass through the loop of thread which is behind the needle. The lower looper after continuing the same path should move towards the right of the serger. It is also required to carry the lower thread through the thread of the needle.

It is time for the looper to move from right to left not with the tip of the upper looper passing behind the lower one. It would also pick up the lower looper thread and the thread of the needle. The lower looper needs to start movement in the far left position in which it was earlier. The upper looper is to continue moving to the left, it holds the lower looper thread and the thread of the needle in place.

The needle is supposed to start on its downward path while passing behind the upper looper. It would also secure the upper looper thread as a result. And hereby we complete the tricky but beautiful design of the over-lock stitch. Oh well! The entire job is not over. The rounds of the same procedure are to be repeated many a time depending upon the cloth and requirement. I hope, you will be encouraged to make more such and now with the help of Viking sewing machines since you have understood the technique.
