Work accident or occupational accident is any accident that occurs during the course of work leading to a mental or physical injury that could lead to diseases or death. According to the international labor organization, more than 337 million accidents occurs on the job each year which contributes to more than 2.3 million deaths annually.

These accidents could occur while at work, or carrying out the business or errands of the employer. Working accidents are usually unplanned and unexpected events. Diseases could be contracted from work as a result of exposure during working hours to risk factors over a period of time in the course of working

Working accidents include poisoning, attacks by human beings or animals, falls and slips, transport accidents while on board the means of transportation in the course of work , station and airport accidents to mention a few, inhalation, absorption ingestion  and direct contact with harmful chemicals. Some workplace accidents have minor effects while others could have more serious consequences. Workplace accidents could occur as a result of unsafe behaviors or unsafe conditions.

In the Unites States of America, the National Institute for occupational safety and health conduct researches and investigations in workplaces centered at addressing workplace health and safety hazard. This has overtime resulted into the formulation of guidelines such as the Occupational Safety and Health

In Boston there are majorly five most common workplace accidents. They are:

Material Handling: This involves or could consist of lifting heavy object that could easily fall on the worker and could lead to injuries on the back, neck while carrying, cutting and working on sharp edges of an object or even death.

Slipping, Tripping or Falling: While on the job. These do not result in serious on-the-job injuries in Boston, but is very common in Boston as cases of these accidents are constantly reported in Boston.

Collusion: When workers collide with objects. This could be a moving stationary object or machinery. Collision accidents accounts for 10 percent of workplace accident annually in Boston.

Using Tools:  Tool accidents could result into serious cuts and amputation. In Boston, if you suffer from any of these workplace accidents that lead to amputation of the foot, leg, arm or hand, you may be entitled to additional workers’ compensation benefits above the standard monthly workers’ compensation. These benefits are mostly paid at once and are not supposed to affect your monthly entitlements after retirement. To reap a good benefit from this deal, it is advisable to see a workers’ compensation attorney if you are qualified for this benefit.

Cumulative Trauma: This occurs as a result of an overuse of a particular part or organ in the body. A lot of repetitive stress injury at work is caused by cumulative trauma. These also include strains and sprains. A lot of people also do not realize that injuries can form over time to become cumulative trauma if not properly attended to, so the best thing to do once you realize that you are injured, particularly after being diagnosed, is to report to your doctor. This is pertinent because it involves one of the strict notice requirements inherent in the Massachusetts State’s Worker’s Compensation Act.
