Ages have proved that India is a card-loving nation. India is termed as the potential gold mine for the world in online gambling. The everyday rise in a number of people involved in gambling in India is either an aspiration to earn more in less time or is a pleasure seeking activity for the rich. Improved economic conditions and standard of living and an urge for more has also attracted many Indians in the world of gambling.

The history of kings and independence prevails and so are the stories about Indian people involved in gambling. The practice of gambling, therefore, has luxuriously been passed down to the generations in India. Dice games were the most prominent gambling activity of the early Indians. Along with this, they were also interested in sports betting related to animals, such as cock fighting and ram fighting. These practices are few to be found today as they are illegal and highly unethical. Now people have shifted towards more sophisticated and fun loving forms of gambling, such as Satta Matka and Rummy, while animal related gambling has progressed towards Horse Racing.

According to statistics, India is the largest and fastest growing online gambling market in the world. As per to gaming statistics, 40% of the India population is involved in gambling activities with the number increasing with every strike of the second.

Though lotteries and horse racing are legal all other gambling activities in India are restricted. The government claims that gambling leads to economic loss, crime, corruption and money laundering while for the states it is a huge source of revenue. But as always, irrespective of the legality and ill effects, gambling continues to be an integral part of social and cultural life in India, with people betting for fun or need and also as a tradition of religious festivals such as Diwali.

Lotteries have been given a legal status within India. However, private lotteries are still illegal. The largest Indian illegal private lottery game is the Indian Matka. It is a form of lottery and a very simple and easy to understand the game. Matka is also played on online portals and has grabbed more attention since then as all lotteries are combined on an international level so Indian have a credential to put their bets only by picking lottery cards where the jackpot is the biggest.

Whilst the future of gambling and its legality in India is uncertain and fading away but indeed the urge of gambling still lives. Gambling has been an Indian culture throughout the past several decades and it seems set on a course to continue to do into the foreseeable future.
