Generate PDF Documents from Scratch with Adobe LiveCycle

Posted by interfuse on August 11th, 2010

Adobe LiveCycle is a great and incredibly easy application to learn how to use to create professional PDFs for use online and off. If you have used WYSIWYG (what you see is what you get) editors in the past you will find that everything is point and click, drag and drop. Create your form elements, name them, assign default values and allow options for users to select a date from a calendar script or a value from a pull-down menu.

I found the most complicated part of this application (something that most people would not normally use) to be the HTTP Submit Button. There seemed to be no real explanation on how this worked or how to process values submitted by the form. After doing a bit of research and digging around, I found the information I needed and was able to begin processing forms of all kinds.

To download an example script that you can modify to process forms with the HTTP Submit Button, click here. To see it in action, direct the URL of your HTTP Submit Button to http://interfu.se/scripts/http_submit_button_processor.php. If you need your data returned back to you in a certain order, open the Hierarchy window (from the Window tab) and sort your form fields there to show the order you want them processed by the php script.

Other features that come available in this package for you to add to your pdf documents include text fields, images, date and time fields, decimal fields, drop-down lists, radio buttons, list boxes, passwords, print buttons, country lists, state drop-down menus, pre-formatted address blocks, even barcodes.

If you?re looking for an easy-to-use, professional PDF generator, Adobe LiveCycle might be the application for you.
