How To Replace a Damaged or Broken Leather Strap

Posted by Armstrong Louis on July 27th, 2017

People have a common misconception that if their leather watchstrap is damaged or broken, they would have to purchase a new watch altogether. This, however, is unnecessary, as straps can be replaced to quickly update the look and feel of your watch. Many people prefer to replace their leather straps voluntarily on a frequent basis, to change the style of an old watch and to experiment with different colours and shades. Whatever may be the reason, there are certain factors to be considered when you decide to replace your leather watchstrap. (Information credit: Lars Larsen)

  1. The Quality:  The first factor to consider here is the quality of leather. There are two major types of leather that are used in the manufacturing of straps. These are, bonded leather and top-grain leather. Bonded leather is the inferior one of the two, with its manufacturing process involving the reconstitution of leather waste products to produce a cheaper leather alternative. Top-grain leather or corrected leather is recommended, which are manufactured using a single hide, making it stronger and much more durable.
  2. Hardware: The next thing to consider is the watch case and size of the dial. Proper care should be taken to see if the watch case or dial shows signs of corrosion or rust. The size and shape of the watch case will also have a direct bearing on the thickness of the leather strap chosen.
  3. Stitching: The best watch straps always have long and wide stitches that ensure that it is strong. One tip to follow is to check if the stitches are showing in a strap. If they are, then they may not withstand regular wear and tear over a long period of time.
  4. Strap Length: An appropriate strap length should be chosen which can properly fit around the person’s wrist. Regular length leather straps are available in plenty, but may not work for individuals who have particularly small or large wrists. Measurements should be taken to find the right size, and the old leather strap can be used as a guide. It’s important to remember to measure the leather strap without considering the buckle.
  5. Watch Clasp: There are different kinds of watch clasps to choose from according to the user’s preference and comfort. The most widely used leather watch clasp is the buckle. Other options include the butterfly clasp, flip clasp, and the security clasp.
  6. Avoid Faux leather: Faux leather, also commonly referred to as leatherette, mimics the look and feel of leather but is made out of artificial materials. Certain types like Polyurethane and Polyvinyl have adverse effects on the human skin if not handled properly. PVC leather is not a breathable material and consequent sweating can cause damage to both the strap and your wrist. People have been known to develop allergic reactions to the sweat trapped under faux leather straps. It is generally not as strong and long lasting as genuine leather, and thus, should be avoided at all costs.

Conclusion

If all the above steps are followed, you will have no problem picking out a leather strap that can replace your old one. Leather strap replacement is a simple and inexpensive method that literally breathes new life into an old watch. It is perfect for an office or work atmosphere where the air is conditioned. They have great variety, with choices in several colours, textures, finishes and hides.   The most important point to remember is, of course, the user’s comfort while wearing the watch, and he or she should take appropriate measures to ensure that it’s a right fit.
