Part 2:
PIMPS AND PROSTITUTES:

The public’s knowledge about sex workers and their relations to pimps is based mainly on media stereotypes, at one extreme, we are exposed to examples of hookers with hearts of gold in movies like Leaving Las Vegas, while at the other extreme we see images of fishnet stockings, knee-length boots, and drug use. Due to the general ignorance and misperceptions about prostitution, there is need to show relevant aspects from inside the industry.

A hooker that also goes by many other names is described as one that exchanges sexual favours for money, drugs, or other desirable commodities while a pimp is one that controls the activities and lives off the proceeds of one or more prostitutes. There are various types of prostitutes from the independent high-class/corporate/elite hooker living in a plush apartment in the city centre to the street walker touting passer byes on dimly lit street corners.

Not all sex-work is controlled by a pimp, many sex workers advertise and work alone while others register with agencies to do the marketing and call answering for them for a fee, It is sad to say however that the majority of the prostitution in any community is pimp controlled. When prostitutes work for a pimp, they are paid a fraction of what they earn while where and how they work is controlled.

In the pimps world, recruitment is the main component of their business model, Pimps recruit people of all ages, genders, and races but will usually keep away from minors, in part due to fears of being arrested. Pimps appeal to hookers’ emotional dependencies and economic needs and will promise material comforts among other things, these continued forms of coercion and fraud that include feigning romantic interest make the sex workers approach friends and other individuals to join their prostitution ring under the pimp.

Pimps will usually impose various rules on prostitutes and the most common are:
Drugs and alcohol: Drug addicted sex workers are typically unreliable and a danger to the business.

Type of customers : Younger clients are not favoured as they could engage in drug use, be rough, commit robbery, leave without paying, or are pimps scouting for new employees etc, etc, etc

In a lot of the cases the pimps double up as drug peddlers and use their less popular prostitutes to push their drugs, this is a double standard because when a hooker supplies a client with drugs, the punter will usually want the prostitute to share the drugs with them while getting intimate, in cases were the sex-worker joins in the drug taking, they easily become drug addicts that quickly fall out of favour with the pimp because of the new habit and unreliability the habit causes.

sex work and drug abuse seem to go hand in hand but this is possibly due to the fact that sex work is primarily illegal, drug taking punters know that if they need a fix it would be easier and safer to find a hooker to do the supply.
