What is ISO 22000?

ISO 22000 is a food safety regulation which looks after the quality of food products and maintains a standard of hygiene and quality in the food that is produced to meet with the preset requisites of the international food safety management system. This form of certification is not only applicable to food manufacturers but also lengthens its reach to caterers and the hotel industry as well. It is very important for a company to change their retroactive way of testing of the quality of food and adapt to the more advanced and preventive measures so as to avail the best possible results out of their Food Safety Management System.

ISO 22000 standards and their meanings

There are a number of preset requisites which are a must and the ISO 22000 standard specifies a set of such standards which need to be met in order to make the best out of one’s food safety management system. These preset requisites include:

  • Communication and interaction
  • Management of systems
  • Previously set requirements of programs
  • HACCP Principles

The first point about communication and interaction is very vital so as to identify the potential hazards in the food chain and to communicate the same through all the different levels of the food chain including the customers so that these hazards can be dealt with and resolved before causing any potential damage.

It is very important that an organization understands its position and role in a food chain so as to facilitate a fluid mode of communication in producing and delivering safe food products to the final consumer and hence the management of systems is very important.

It is also required to have preset programs and objectives in the company so that there is no confusion in the execution of a procedure and so that there is a constant standard which is maintained while doing the set roles of the organization.

HACCP stands for Hazard Analysis and Critical Control Point and has been merged with the prerequisite programs and is very important for the achievement of the standards set by ISO 22000. Hazard analysis is the solution to producing safe food since it provides the company with knowledge of where it is going wrong and also allows it to implement preventive measures wherever required.

How to achieve these standards?

The ISO 22000 is a confusing and complicated standard and in order to achieve an ISO 22000 Certificate it is advisable to take the help of a competent consultant who is well acquainted with the standard and also has enough knowledge to train the company in ways to achieve those standards and also train them in HACCP such that the company can conduct its own internal audits and maintain the food safety standards of the products it is producing before sending them to the final consumer.
