Role Of Revision In Getting Good Grades In IB Math

Goal of education has always been to make one resourceful enough to deal with the environment in most effective way. Experiencial learning is miles ahead of tye instructional learning in this regard. But still, all the boards, whether our very own CBSE or ICSE or the international curriculum like IB, IGCSE, they all rely on some form of grading to evaluate the effectiveness of the teaching -learning process.

Students have used various strategies to maximize their grades. The grades obtained in final examination play a vital role in it.  Student's ability to reproduce his aquired knowledge in final exam depends greatly upon their ability to recall already learnt information or concept.

In semester system or continuous evaluation, memory plays a relatively smaller role as students get to reproduce only recently learnt concepts in examination, but still they have to reproduce it. If some student has not done proper revision then there is big chance that he or she may not correctly reproduce the learnt concept.

According to Ms. Akanksha Singh, the mentor at Math Classes, premier learning centre for IB math students in Gurgaon, role of revision has mostly been underplayed. If emphasis is properly put on revision, then even an average student can score very good.

Our qualified IB math HL SL in Gurgaon are mostly focused on teaching subjects in their classes and are less concerned about the revision aspect of learning. A good mentor or coach should adequately emphasise the role of revision and not just focus over doing more and more hours of newer problems.

Although its universally accepted that practice makes a man perfect but practice of newer problems all the time may lead to forgetting of earlier learned concepts and problems. It should always be a good mix of new and old.

A good revision is about consolidation of concepts. Its about sending the information from short term memory stire to long term memory store. According to information processing model if brain, periodic revision is key for a sound long term memory and higher grades.
