Many people wish to visit the United States. Some make their dreams come true while others keep thinking about it. I was one of the many. I always used to wonder how I would ever make it. Is it easy? What is it going to be like? Are there any formal procedures that need to be completed for me to travel? My mind was swirling with these whirlwind of questions. And suddenly, I was all confused.

For those wondering whether I made it to the United States or not; I did make it. Now that I have traveled, I thought of writing this post and sharing my experiences regarding what I learnt during my immigration procedure.

To start with, you must first apply for a passport if you do not have one. If you have one, you can apply for a visa straightaway. Your purpose of visit to the United States would determine your type of visa that would be granted to you. This would also include the time period you would want to reside in the United States. In case, you intend to live in for a maximum of six months, a non - immigrant visa is the one for you. The non - immigrant visa includes tourist and business purposes or study visas.

In order to obtain a visa, you must fill and submit the relevant visa application form at the nearest US Consulate. All the relevant documents also have to be submitted. Ensure that you have submitted all the documents and most importantly, the right documents. Missing out on even a single document can lead to your application being rejected.

Following this is an interview with the visa official. An interview could be scheduled with specific consulates and it depends on the number of vacancies in each consulate. There is a fee that has to be paid for your interview. This fee is not refundable.

Here, it has to be noted that getting an appointment for an interview is really tough. Once the vacancies are available, they are booked instantly. Usually, around six to ten weeks could be expected as being the waiting time before getting an appointment. However, it depends from country to country.

For some, the entire procedure might seem very easy. As for the others like me, it might turn out to be the most confusing assignment of their lifetime. If you are the one like me, I suggest and highly recommend contacting an immigration and visa specialist dealing with the US visas.
