Why Natural Latex Mattresses Surpass Memory Foam

The Operative Term Here Is Foam

Memory foam has its orthopedic advantages where the spinal column is concerned and the body as a whole. It also has the ability to mold itself to the human body in a balanced and supportive way to prevent pressure on different parts of the body. In other words, it offers relief from painful pressure points. The problem with memory foam has to do with the foam itself and the materials used to produce it, which may surprise you. Invented in nineteen-sixty-six by NASA's Ames Research Center, it was meant to improve the safety of cushions for aircraft. Two scientists, Charles Yost and Chiharu Kubokawa from the Stencel Aero Engineering Corporation, contributed a great deal to the project. Memory foam is very sensitive to changes in temperature, so it was originally referred to as slow spring-back foam.

Charles Yost referred to it as temper foam. It was produced by pumping gas into a polymer solution, and the foam had what was called an open cell solid structure that matched any pressure applied against it, and then it slowly sprang back to its original shape. So, it’s primarily comprised of polyurethane and other toxic chemicals to increase its density and viscosity. Many people think of it as viscoelastic foam or low-resilience foam. The problem with polyurethane is that it releases toxic gas that can cause a variety of health problems, such as eye itching and swelling, respiratory issues, skin problems, dizziness, fatigue, vomiting, diarrhea, flu-like symptoms, sore throats, headaches and allergic reactions.

The Key Word Here Is Latex

Like bamboo, latex is an utterly amazing natural resource with a fascinating texture that looks like liquid silk in its raw harvested state. Unlike memory foam, latex mattresses release no toxic gasses, as long they are made from 100% latex, instead of containing a layer of foam made from nasty synthetic chemicals. Both firm and comfortable, natural latex mattresses also provide orthopedic benefits just like memory foam. Purchasing the right mattress is a serious matter and a serious investment, and although latex beds can be a bit costly, they are worth the money and they will last a very long time, so it’s best to think of it as a long-term investment in one’s health, comfort and wellbeing. Choosing a latex mattress is also an eco-friendly choice to support a sustainable natural resource and a sustainable Green economy that employs a great many people in a number of different countries, which then supports the global economy. In addition, one might consider buying a mattress from a smaller local business as a way of supporting their local economy and local community. In addition to all the other benefits of latex mattresses, they also have a pleasant, natural odor, instead of an unpleasant synthetic odor with potentially harmful effects. In conclusion, if there was ever an organic material that deserved more attention and a closer look, it’s organic latex.
