When choosing a new set of bedroom furniture, the type of design is very important, since furniture is often a long-term investment. For example, modern platform beds come in a variety of designs, such as storage beds, canopy beds, beds that look like they float, beds that have headboards and some that don’t. Some platform beds use Tatami mats in lieu of a box-spring and some use wooden slats for support. The design isn’t as much of a concern with dressers and nightstands, since their designs are simpler, but whether to purchase a matching set of furniture is important to consider, since this adds an extra element of aesthetic appeal to any bedroom.

Another design aspect to keep in mind has to do with assembling the platform bed, since some are easier to assemble than others, and some are sturdier than others because of their design. Even if you pay the delivery team to assemble the platform bedframe, you may want a design that isn’t too complicated in case you ever move to a new home or move the bed to another bedroom.

The type of wood used to construct the furniture is another important factor to consider. Different types of woods have different colors and different textures and grains. The look of bamboo is radically different from cherry wood or mahogany or oak. When considering what type if wood to choose, it’s best to compare the choices of wood the present color of the walls and whether or not to paint them a different color. The color of the carpeting is another consideration, but it’s cheaper to paint the walls than it is to replace the carpet.

One big way to emphasize style is to pick a theme for the entire bedroom. For example you could go with a Spanish style or a Japanese style or a Native American style or Caribbean. Also, themes don’t have to be limited to cultural / national themes, they can also be conceptual, such as abstract or geometric or astronomical. Once you’ve decorated the bedroom with artwork, knickknacks, carpets, etc., then you choose a style of furniture that fits well with your cultural or conceptual theme.

One thing to give serious consideration to purchasing bedroom furniture is the materials used to construct it and how eco-friendly they are. As the highest rating available, the E-1 rating for manufacturing furniture was created by the European Union in Brussels, and it’s the strictest rating process for furniture in the world. This approach evaluates furniture by the amount of synthetic chemicals used when manufacturing the products. It also measures the amount of toxic gas that is eventually released into people’s homes. Then, each piece of furniture is designated with a rating of E-1 as the highest, with no off-gassing at all, and E-5 as the lowest, with a lot of off-gassing. Presently, China the Pacific Rim and the United States have no such standardized system for evaluating and rating furniture.
