Types of Car Stereos ? Which One Do You Need?

If you love music and want to listen to it during your drive home, it makes sense to invest in a high-quality car stereo system—particularly in good speakers. There are various types of car stereo speakers available in the market, but there are generally two types of speaker systems. One is the ‘component,’ and the other is the ‘full range.’ What makes these two systems different from each other is the use of drivers, which is the speaker’s central component.

In a component system, every speaker has a driver of its own. This means that the different ranges of frequencies have their own dedicated drivers. Since component speakers are placed in various areas in the vehicle, the sound environment is fuller. Meanwhile, full range speakers are more commonly used in a lot of factory audio systems. They are more affordable and more available than component systems. The downside to full range speakers is that every frequency comes from a single source, making the sound less clear and not quite as crisp.

There are also five types of car speakers: the tweeters, super tweeters, midrange, woofers, and subwoofers. Tweeters produce very high frequencies, such as the sound of an alto saxophone or crashing cymbals. Super tweeters, as their name suggests, are responsible for producing the highest possible sound frequencies. Adding super tweeters to your car stereo system will ensure that nothing is lost in the range of highs.

Meanwhile, midrange speakers produce the details that tweeters and woofers cannot. A component system devotes the tweeters and woofers to high and low ranges, while everything in between is sent to the midrange speakers. The woofers are the speakers responsible for producing mid to low tones, like the sound of bass drums and grunge guitars. Lastly, the subwoofers are dedicated to the lowest frequencies possible. Often, power subwoofers are the main focus of competitions in car audio.

When it comes to choosing the right speaker systems for your car, one of the most crucial things that you have to consider is the speaker’s size. You should also take note of the range of sounds that different speakers produce and determine the ones that you need.
