Pakistan cricket has never been in such a critical situation as it is in today. The selectors are facing a dilemma in choosing the players who can perform well and play for the nation in the international matches. Recently Pakistan has faced an immense defamation due to the suspected involvement of the leadership of Pakistan cricket team in spot fixing. Further, due to the unsafe security arrangements in Pakistan, PCB is facing severe financial problems which in turn affecting the cricketers of Pakistan. There are countless other issues with PCB, which might be longer to cover in this article, following are some unique steps that should be taken by PCB, if not all then at least some of them, to trounce the disastrous issues in Pakistan cricket.
Change in PCB infrastructure:
There must be a constitution frame as early as possible of PCB. Constitution means there are stipulated rules and regulation. Every one would be bound to abide by the rules of the constitution. If this can be done somehow, there will be a stern discipline.
There must be an election held in PCD to select the Director and Chairman.
Every official of the PCB should be an elected person and the selection should be transparent.
Every official of PCB should only perform the duties assigned to him/her. There must not be an atmosphere of interference at all.
PCB should take necessary steps to improve the infrastructure of first class cricket in Pakistan.
PCB should take steps to introduce school cricket in Pakistan, and that should range from primary level school to higher level.
Quarterly tournaments need to be held in primary, middle, and high schools. Further, there should be annual tournaments as well in primary, middle, and high schools.
There should be college cricket, and university introduced in Pakistan to get new talent. Annual and half yearly tournaments should be held in colleges and universities, and PCB selectors should attend these tournaments to select competent candidates.
Though departmental cricket exists in Pakistan, but that is not as much organized as it should be. So, PCB should take suitable steps to organize departmental cricket. Though the results will not come so early, but for long-term this can be a sensible step.
A national champion trophy among the teams of different departments should be held annually. Like “Wills Cup” had been annually held in Pakistan for many years, but this kind of tournament has not been held since 1998.
The most important thing is that the captain of Pakistan cricket team must be given a defined period under which he has to perform. Till the end of that period, he should not be fired from captaincy.
Role of Selection committee:
All members of selection committee should be transparently elected. Experience, capability, and honesty must be considered in priority in selecting the right candidate.
Selectors should be fair enough in their working
Element of nepotism should be ruled out.
Selectors should make selection only on merit basis.
Selectors should pick only mature cricketers from national tournaments.
Health Structure:
PCB should hire competent doctors, and physiotherapists for health care of Pakistani cricketers, and they should hold responsible for proper health of players.
There should be proper psychotherapy of cricketers to make them mentally strong
Financial structure of the cricketers:
There should be a transparent procedure to set the salary of cricketers. Separate committee consisting independent and loyal persons should be held responsible for setting the salary of cricketers.
Salary of the cricketers should be compatible with their expenses so that they don’t tend to use unfair means.
There must be a separate team consisting independent individuals to audit the utilization of finance in PCB.
Cricketers should be offered valuable incentives against winning the matches. Though PCB often gives such incentives, but these incentives are not motivating and stirring for cricketers.
Leadership:
This is where PCB lacks. There is no transparent procedure to elect the Chairman of cricket board of Pakistan. History of Pakistan cricket proves that almost every time the chairman has been a relative, or a favorite person of a Politician. Hence, to combat this major issue, previous cricketers should be invited to vote for the proposed chairman. Multiple options should be considered in this regard and minimum two chairmen should be chosen. Only the selected chairman would be paid as an employee, the second one would not be paid and would only be taken in consideration if the selected chairman does not perform well. This way the selected chairman would have a fear in mind that another person can replace him if he doesn’t perform as expected.
Political Parties:
Political parties should be wiped out from taking any decision regarding any matter. Undue interference of Politicians is the big issue and the core reason behind the disaster of Pakistan cricket and PCB.
In a nut shell, PCB needs leadership, committed and honest cricketers who play for their nation, talented couches, independent working environment, and honest officials to overcome all these adverse and disastrous issues.
