Posted by BelgiumVisa on September 14th, 2017

Belgium is a quaint place with perfectly preserved medieval streets and ancient architecture. Picturesque canals border these streets and make a pleasing sight to any traveller. This nation, though small in size, is a significant part of Europe’s history. It was in this place that the famous Napoleon met his end and Belgium was an important participant in both the World Wars. A few of the most important places to visit in Belgium are:

Cathedral of Saint Bavo, Ghent:

This majestic cathedral displays some of the best religious architecture of ancient Belgium. Splendid artworks with stained glass windows grace this well-preserved cathedral and the Flemish masterpiece, “The Altar of Ghent” is housed here. It is named after Saint Bavo, a religious figure from Ghent.

Ghent’s Gravensteen:

The castles that were built by the crusaders in Syria were inspiration to the Counts of Flanders who then built this huge and magnificent fort. A moated Fortress, this place is one of the best examples of medieval life that are incredibly preserved. The roof of this fort provides panoramic views of the town and dates back to several centuries.

Grand place, Antwerp:

The Grand place, also known as the Grote Markt, is one Belgium’s finest examples of guild house architecture with its famous steeple roofed appearance. The grand opulence as evident in the method of construction still stands tall today and draws plenty of tourists every year. Coopers' House and Grocers' House, in particular are the best examples of Belgian architecture.

St. Peter's Church, Leuven:

This is one of Belgium's best preserved examples of the Brabant Gothic style with its pointed ornate arch windows and sheaf pillars. The choir and ambulatory of this church are home to a museum dedicated to religious art and hold some of the best Flemish paintings. Dirk Bout’s painting of the Last supper, which is hung there, is definitely worth a visit.

Waterloo:

This is the place where Napoleon was defeated in his final battle. Today, the countryside where the battle took place is a landscape of agricultural fields but an artificial hill was built in memory of this battle on the surrounding flatlands with a lion sculpture on top of the summit to celebrate the day when Napoleon's army was finally defeated.
