The police at Ndiegoro Station in Aba, Abia State of Nigeria, in a rare exhibition of professionalism, yesterday at Ugbowo in Awgu Local Government of Enugu State, recovered an alleged stolen two-year-old baby.

Daily Sun gathered that on December 21, one Mr. Obinna Ofornagoro of 17 United Street, Aba, reported to the Ndiegoro Police Station that his sister’s two-year-old son named Sochima had been stolen. The complainant said he suspected one Chioma Udeh of the same address to have committed the offence.

Based on the available information, the police at Ndiegoro swung into action and two days later, traced and arrested the said Chioma Udeh in her home state of Ebonyi where she had gone for the Christmas holidays. On interrogation, she confessed to the crime and went further to state that she gave the stolen baby to her lover whom she identified as Ifeanyi Nwobodo.

Daily Sun furthered gathered that Chioma and Nwobodo had been lovers over the years and the latter insisted that their relationship could only turn into marriage if the former got pregnant and or bore him a child.
To satisfy the man who Chioma was said to have been deeply in love with and wanted at all costs to get married to, she got pregnant for him. But after three months, she had miscarriage and lost the pregnancy.
Her unflinching desire to get married to Nwobodo, a source hinted, made Chioma not to inform her man about the miscarriage she had. She instead kept her distance from her lover who, whenever he called, was told things were moving on well.

After a while, Chioma was said to have told her lover that she had given birth to a baby boy and that he (Nwobodo) could only see the boy if he would hasten up and pay her bride price. As to prove the authenticity of her message, Chioma was reported to have, on December 21, stolen the child and gone straight to Ugbowo and presented him to Ifeanyi as the baby boy she bore for him and urged him to set the process of their getting married in motion. She left the boy with her boyfriend and travelled to her hometown in Ebonyi State hopefully to prepare for an impending marriage.

As fate might play its role, it was while in Ebonyi State that Chioma was arrested and upon interrogation owned up to the crime. Through her confession, on December 27, police traced the child to Ugbowo where he was found with the second accused and her lover, Ifeanyi. When Daily Sun visited the Ndiegoro Police Station, the District Police Officer, DPO, Mr. Joshua Bakyu, was said to have gone to Umuahia on official duties. However, a senior police officer, who spoke on condition of anonymity confirmed the incident. He assured that the suspects would be charged to court after investigations.
