Your old lotion bottles may be convenient but aren’t the best for storing your essential oils. For certified pure therapeutic grade oils to retain their original qualities, you need to store them in proper containers. The most common containers are aluminum, plastic and glass so it's worth exploring each option before judging the best one.

Plastic

Pure essential oils have a corrosive effect on plastic and slowly eat away at the container. Although the plastic may not dissolve completely as is the case with acid, the oils get contaminated and rendered ineffective in a short time. Ingesting essential oils contaminated with plastic can also brings up health concerns. It is best to stay away from these containers all together.

Aluminum

Just as with plastic, aluminum can react with pure essential oils because of the oil's chemical constituents. This reaction is especially common with concentrated oils such as thyme and cinnamon. Some aluminum containers have an interior lining so there is some leeway here. Overall, it is better not to risk it and avoid storing your oils in aluminum or other metal bottles. This is especially the case if you are using oils therapeutic or ingesting oils for healthy, young living lifestyle.

Glass

Glass essential bottles are the safest and best choice that any wellness advocate would be happy to recommend. Glass containers don't corrode or contaminate pure essential oils. Clear glass is however not recommended for a different reason other than the ones explored so far. Direct sunlight disintegrates and compromises essential oils. Opt for cobalt blue or amber colored bottles as these are most effective in protecting against harmful UV rays.

Tips for Storing Essential Oils in Glass Containers

You don’t necessarily need to store your essential oils in the refrigerator as long as you store away from direct sunlight. Kitchen or bathroom cabinets are good places to store.

Choose a glass bottle with a secure lid or cap and keep it tightly closed when not using the oils. This precaution protects the essential oils from moisture and oxidation which can compromise its integrity and effectiveness.

It is also helpful that you label your containers especially if you are using multiple essential oils. Use waterproof labels which you can purchase at any serious essential oils supply store. You may also want to include details on the label such as whether the oil is used orally, topically or aromatic.

Glass containers are the best option or storing your pure essential oil glass containers. Remember to choose colored glass, preferably amber or cobalt blue to protect the contents from direct sunlight and harmful UV rays. Even with the proper container, store in a dark, cool and dry place.
