Manila ? the Pearl of the Orient

Lots of big cities are described as being ‘bustling’. Well, until you’ve spent time in Manila, you don’t know the meaning of the word! The Metro Manila area is home to over 24million people, and it is widely considered as the most densely populated city in the world.

Whether you find that appealing or not is, of course, down to your own personal tastes. Some may feel overwhelmed by so much activity, but many other travelers will thrill in the sheer scale and excitement of it all.

To help you get a better idea of where you’d like to visit, we’ve identified three of the city’s must-see areas for tourists.

1)      Intramuros

This is perhaps the most popular area of the city with tourists, and it’s easy to see why.

It’s often referred to as ‘Old Manila’, due to its brilliantly-maintained, centuries-old colonial architecture, which dominates the entire area. Fascinating churches, antique shops, manor houses, art galleries and more are all to be found in this particularly cultural area.

Best of all, you can tour the area in time-honored tradition, with a horse and carriage!

2)      Makati

Makati is probably the most up-market area in all of Metro Manila, and is effectively the financial center of the entire country. Tourists to the area will find shopping, restaurants and hotels of a quality that rivals anywhere else in Southeast Asia.

If you’re in desperate need of some retail therapy, head straight to this high-rise, modern area.

3)      Ermita

Of all the areas in Manila, this one has the highest concentration of touristic sights.

Within fairly close proximity to each other, you’ll find the Manila Ocean Park (with its excellent underwater walkway), the informative National Museum of the Philippines, the architectural marvel that is the Manila Central Post Office, and the culturally significant Rizal Park.

Trust us; you’ll want to earmark an entire day of your stay in Manila, just to explore Ermita!
