Travellers should also venture there for its brilliant cultural scene that offers a wide range of activities to enjoy. This amazing part of the world is influenced by both British and Spanish culture, and there are plenty of superb venues to visit for something unique. The British territory really has the chance to become a top cultural hub in Europe as there are numerous galleries, theatres and outdoor venues that provide all sorts of events.

Public art work

This year the government of Gibraltar backed the idea of professional artists creating some incredible street art or graffiti to provide a popular form of public art. The first destination for a mural was at the historic Georgian building of Ince’s Hall Theatre Façade. Tourists should definitely have a wander down Main Street and take a look at the captivating work that has been created through street art. Renowned street artist Ben Eine from London has created the work on the theatre building, which has become a popular tourist attraction. Eine gave President Barack Obama a painting in 2010 from British Prime Minister David Cameron.

Galleries and theatres

A brilliant destination to visit for art fans is the huge Gustavo Bacarisas Gallery that is found in Casemates Square. Named after the famous painter from Gibraltar it opened in 2011, and has many local and international artists regularly showcasing their work there. The Alameda Open Air Theatre is a lovely spot to venture to that puts theatre performances outside when the weather is warm. The open-air theatre is home to the annual Gibraltar Fringe Festival that takes place in late spring over four days with live music, dance, films and comedy. A visit to this venue is a wonderful way to connect with the best cultural events in Gibraltar.

Where to stay

Heading to The Caleta Hotel Gibraltar is a wonderful decision as it offers fantastic rooms in a variety of sizes including twin, double and family. The four-star residence is a superb hotel in Gibraltar found next to Catalan Bay with lovely rooms that provide spectacular views of the Mediterranean Sea. The air-conditioned living spaces offer great amenities including an interactive television, telephone, mini-bar, a hairdryer and luxury toiletries. The lovely Nunos Restaurant has fine Italian cuisine while The Bay View Bistro provides pretty views and great food. The accommodation is perfect for weddings especially down to the scenery. The residence offers an excellent spa, fitness suite, swimming pool and courtyard gardens.

St Michael’s Cave

Although a major tourist attraction for another reason, St Michael’s Cave is also known for being a top spot for concerts and theatre productions. It has run events there since the early 1960s and is known for its impressive acoustics. There is a concrete stage and tourists often head there for major music festivals. The John Mackintosh Hall is also one of the most crucial cultural destinations that Gibraltar has to offer, as it hosts the International Literary Festival and the International Art Exhibition. It has a library, theatre, meeting spaces and is an amazing cultural hub visited by many residents and travellers from Europe and beyond.
