Hair loss is a common condition faced by men and women both, some facing the condition as early as their mid-thirties. However, balding is more common in men, owing to uncontrollable loss of hair.

What are the Reasons for hair loss in men?

Male pattern baldness – also known as androgenic alopecia, is one the leading causes of hair loss in men. This condition affects more than 50% of men above the age of 50, causing partial balding that starts from the temples slowly progressing towards the crown.

Male pattern baldness has a genetic predisposition, that means the children with one or both parents suffering from androgenetic alopecia are prone to suffer from the same condition.

Androgenetic alopecia causes hair loss in men, due to an uncharacteristic sensitivity of the patient's hair follicles to the male sex hormones, known as androgens.  This causes the hair growth cycle to shorten and hair follicles to weaken causing the hair follicle to shrink, resulting in shorter and finer strands of hair. Eventually, no new hair grows back causing balding.

Other Reasons for hair loss in men include,

  •          Medical treatments – Many medical treatments such as chemotherapy, beta blockers and thyroid medications aggravate hair loss, which returns to normal upon completion of the treatment.
  •          Stress-induced hair loss - may be due to physical or emotional stress.
  •          Chronic ailment - causing systemic weakness may also cause hair loss in men and women.
  •          Unhygienic scalp condition - may cause dandruff, scalp infection, tinea capitis and more, causing hair loss.
  •          Alopecia areata -  is caused due to the autoimmune disorder in which affects hair follicles in localized areas of skin. In alopecia areata, the immune system mistakenly attacks the healthy hair follicle causing hair fall.
  •          Abuse - Excessive shampooing, heat treatment and chemical treatment of the hair can also cause hair loss in men and women.
  •          Trichotillomania - hair fall due to hair pulling habit, which may also cause scarring of the scalp resulting in permanent damage to the hair follicles.
  •          Injury – Any injury to the scalp may result in scarring that damages the hair follicles resulting in bald spots in the location.

Many reasons for hair loss in men and women are reversible with the right treatment at the right time. Hence, one should always take hair fall seriously, and consult a practitioner to identify the causes of hair fall and opt for the prescribed treatment.
