The design of the dress is so simple that it does not require much detailing. The only details you have are the side panels and the breast darts. Other than these two details, you do not have any. It is free size literally. This makes it one of the simplest dresses to design. This is because the main idea behind designing this dress is to allow the woman to move freely without restricting her in any way.

The younger women love these dresses a lot. However, the middle aged as well as the older woman has displayed a liking for the same in recent times. The hem lines are short. This was the reason the older women detested this dress in the olden days. Nowadays, the older women too like to display their femininity. At one point in the late 1950s and 1960s, the shift dress was an important part of the wardrobe in practically every Hollywood film.  
 
The popularity of the dress is such that it even high school students love it. You cannot say the same about any other dress in the fashion world. The dress has a tremendous mass appeal. People of all ages love to strut around in these shift dresses especially in the summer months. They are loose fitting and hence have a great sense of freedom.

Normally, you find them as black dresses because black is the most formal color of all. Thus, you do not see the older generation patronizing these dresses.
