Permanent Double Refining

First of all, all refining point values are roughly divided by ten in the new system, and the same applies to gear as well. Since it’s a global change affecting all RP, the system doesn’t move here. Stuffing a Period of 500 RP into something that requires 10,000 RP obviously has the same effect as stuffing a Peridot of 50 RP into something that requires 1,000 RP.

On top of that however?the devs cut progression RP of artifact gear in half. A rank 60 legendary piece of gear requires 232,260 RP, exactly 1/20 of its original?4,645,200 RP. What this means is that refining artifact gear works as fast as during a double refining event. Only that it’s permanent.

More Variety in Refining Points

Now half RP obviously only helps if the availability of refining points doesn’t change. Fewer required RP wouldn’t be too great if at the same point you were no longer able to farm as much. But fortunately there’s good news on that front as well. Since refining points are now a global currency, and matching bonuses are gone, more stones and gems contribute to the progression. So gunning for upgrades you can now for example add Sharandar quests to the list, and are not limited to the Well of Dragons. A replacement to the former double event also makes sure you’ll still get some sort of time-limited boost. The new event will drop additional RP as you kill mobs.

There is one downside however. In the old system existing gear would roughly give 80% of its RP when refined into a matching type. In the new one this crumbles to 20%.

Conclusion

The refinement of artifact gear got a lot easier. The goal of the devs was to move away from a system that required saving up tons of different refining stones and gems for a double weekend. And for artifact gear, it does just that. Upgrading gear is now permanently as fast as during a former double refining. If you were utilizing these events, the speed of your upgrade won’t change. You can however now refine on the spot, which is a great convenience boost.

Things unfortunately get a lot more complicated when you have to switch gear. Old stuff only giving 20% of its RP value means you’re nearly starting each and every piece from scratch. It can obviously turn out to be a pain if multiple consecutive mods introduce an upgrade for your build. On the contrary it will be less of an issue the longer you can stick with a particular piece. In any case you should think about turning your refined artifact gear into RP twice now.
