Everyone should be able to defend him or herself because violence is an unfortunate fact of our lives. Regardless of strength, size, or previous training, anyone can learn several effective self-defense techniques. Here is a list of ten self-defense techniques you should learn to keep yourself safe in violent situations.

Prevention

Prevention is the best self-defense. In any unpredictable and violent situation one must know how to prevent someone from attacking you. It is the first step to defend yourself.

Make Perfect Fist

To defend yourself you should know how to make perfect fist. This means no wagging thumbs or crossed fingers. Bend the middle set of knuckles in. Then bend the second set of knuckles. Place your thumb over the pointer and middle finger and keep your wrist completely straight.

Get loud and Push back

As soon as attacker touches you or it is clear that you cannot escape it, shout loudly “Back Off!” it may not dissuade all attackers but getting loud will warn off those that were looking for easy prey.

The Most effective parts to hit

When you are in some confrontation situation you get only few seconds and few moves to try before the fight may be decided. So aim for the parts of the body where you can damage easily. These parts are eyes, nose, ears, neck, groin, knee, and legs.

How to Maximize Damage

To maximize the damage use those part which inflict more injury. Use your elbows, knees, and head for this purpose. These parts of the body can cause real harm to the opponent.

Wrist Hold

When an attacker grab your wrist, instead of pulling back to try to get out of the hold, squat down into a strong stance, then lean forward and bed your elbow towards him all the way towards his forearm until he can no longer hold into your wrist.

Front and Back Choke Holds

In case you get caught in front and back choke holds, swing your one arm across to break the attacker’s hold, then use your other arm’s elbow or hand in a knife strike position to hit the attacker.

Bear Hug

Bear hug is hand to hand self-defense against the realistic grabs and holds.  When someone hold you from behind, drop your weight and try to hit his head with your elbows or stomp his feet with your feet.

Mount Position

If the attacker has pinned you on the floor you can pivot to be on top. Hook onto his wrist with one hand and use your other hand to grab behind his elbow, tripping his arm to your chest. Then use your foot to trap his foot and leg, lift your hip and turn over onto your knees to get on top.

Sexual Assault

In case you are being sexually assaulted or on the verge of getting it then recognize when an attacker thinks that you can no longer resist. At that point pretend to be compliant. In that split moment predator would think that you have given up and will loosen his grip that will be a chance for you to attack or get away.
