Benefit of Using Double Acting Pivot Hinge

Pivot hinges are door hanging devices installed on either ends of a door frame. They are designed for supporting extra heavy and/or high-traffic doors as they are strong enough to carry more weight than other types of door hinges like the butt hinge. Double acting pivot hinges are a special type of pivot hinge that allow double pivot action on double egress and double acting doors. These special types of hinges allow doors to open in both directions and automatically let the leaf return to a closed position. These hinges are available in all kinds of sizes to support a whole range of door weights and sizes.

Double acting doors and double egress doors are often confused with each other and while they may seem similar in mechanism and theory of use, they have distinct differences in purpose and application. Read on to discover these differences and the benefits of using double acting pivot hinges on both types of double doors:

Double acting doors or double swinging doors are impact traffic doors that are able to swing both directions. They can either be a pair of doors or a single door, supported by pivot or double acting hinges. Common uses for double acting doors include shipping and receiving areas, supermarkets, restaurant kitchens, warehouses, grocery stores, and storage facilities, among other high-traffic locations that require quick, easy, and smooth entrances/exits. The two-way movement created by the double acting pivot hinge is a cost-effective solution that allows fast and efficient swinging action through door openings, where a visual and sound barrier is needed to separate the two areas.

Double egress doors are different from double acting doors in that they always come in pairs, in which each door can only swing oppositely. Additionally, the doors are designed to be operated only from the acting leaf side. This is typically push (right side), coinciding with the normal traffic flow. Common applications for double egress doors include corridors in clinics, hospitals, schools, and nursing homes, among other types of buildings. Double acting pivot hinges enable these applications, creating quick and safe exits and entries into an area where the traffic on opposite sides of the door needs to be directed accordingly. This prevents collision with oncoming traffic, which allows for more organized exit and entry into different areas of a building. Depending on the unique needs of your premises, ask your contractor whether it is advisable to install a double acting or double egress door using double acting pivot hinges.
