Gibraltar is a magical amalgam of the past, present and future, with a number of historic attractions, great shopping and plenty of activities. From taking a tour of its nature reserve to a dolphin and whale tour there are an amazing variety of options available to choose from. In terms of shopping it is a haven for shoppers with some of the best high street shopping at a snip of the prices back home in the UK. The fact that Gibraltar is exempt from VAT makes it a duty free shopping paradise.

In terms of accommodation as well as there are quite a few options, ranging from Gibraltar holiday apartments to boutique luxury hotels.

A good place to stay in the scenic Catalan Bay area is the Caleta Hotel Gibraltar, a four star hotel offering premium amenities and facilities at an affordable price.

Some of the top attractions to visit in Gibraltar are:

A City under Siege: One of the top tourist attractions is the City under Siege exhibition, with the buildings featured in it being among the first to have been built by the British in Gibraltar. The distinctive feature about them is the graffiti seen on the walls, with some of its dating back to the 1700’s.

Great Siege Tunnels: Another popular attraction is the series of tunnels embedded deep beneath the Rock of Gibraltar, which extends for approximately thirty miles. A marvellous feat of tunnel engineering!

St Michael’s Cave: It has been around from ancient Roman Times and one of the most visited sights on the peninsula. During the Second World War, it was converted for use into an emergency hospital for wounded soldiers.

The Mediterranean Steps: Meant only for those who are fit and have a sense of adventure. It offers visitors an opportunity to hike through the rugged terrain, with spectacular views and an added element of danger. These steps were purpose built by the military to connect between two defence posts on the peninsula. The summit of the steps is home to two gun batteries dating back to WWII. In 2007 extensive refurbishment of the steps were carried out to make them suitable for thrill seeking visitors.

The Ape’s Den: The peninsula is renowned for its native Barbary macaques, the last remaining wild y monkeys in Europe. There are more than 300 of them and local folklore says when they leave the place, so will the British. The chances of either happening are remote! Take a tour of Apes' Den, to see them up close and personal. Just remember not to try to feed them as they are wild and bite. Also when in town keep an eye on your belongings, as they do occasionally venture into town.

Gibraltar Nature Reserve, Upper Rock: Get to the peak of the Rock of Gibraltar, and you will feel a sense of exhilaration, with the Mediterranean and Atlantic on one side and the continent of Africa on the other. You will get amazing views of the city, marinas, bays and quays. While there head for quiet sojourn to St Michael’s Cave, which is a tranquil and serene place to visit!
