How to take care of Laminate Surfaces

From furniture to flooring, laminates are now amongst the mostly used materials in home decor. Here are some quick tips to clean laminates to keep them beautiful and make them last longer.

Laminate sheets surfaces are the most preferred when it comes to furniture, wall panelling and flooring for your living room, bedroom, bathroom and kitchen. Decorative laminates are available in a variety of colour and finishes. They are cost effective, durable and more resistant to heat and stain when compared to more expensive materials. But laminates are prone to wear and tear due to constant use.

General Tips

  • Laminate sheets can get scratched by sharp objects. Make sure not to use any pointed objects or materials like steel scrubbers to clean them.
  • Laminates can fade with prolonged exposure to sunlight. Keep the laminated furniture away from direct sunlight.
  • Protect the laminate sheets on the floor from excess water when cleaning as moisture and dampness can cause warping.

Kitchen Laminates

The cabinets and shelves in the kitchen, particularly in Indian kitchens pick up a lot of grim. Regular cleaning is all you need to do to keep you kitchen clean.

  • To clean the stubborn greasy spots, use a solution of warm water and dish wash soap. Remember to dry the surface completely.
  • Laminate sheets are non-porous, so dirt cannot accumulate on the surface directly, but accompanied by the oil fumes, dirt can settle in the corners.
  • Avoid hard scrubbers and strong chemical on the floor else they will leave scratches on the floor.

Furniture

Regular dusting with a soft cloth is the best way to keep your laminate furniture clean. Avoid wet wiping.

  • Fingerprints on laminates can be removed with a soft cloth and for greasy fingerprints use a damp cloth
  • Avoid applying a mild cleaning solution directly on the surface; spray the solution and then clean with a mop to avoid stains.
  • Do not use varnish, wax or polish on laminate furniture. Never allow any solution to sit long on laminate furniture

Laminate Floors

Floor laminates look beautiful but they need to be cleaned regularly.

  • Use a damp mop to pick up dust and use less water as too much water can warp the flooring.
  • Do not use polish or wax flooring as it is not real wood.
  • Avoid chemical cleaners, bleach and steel wool – the floor will get scratched or discoloured.
