How to Keep Swimming Pool Water Healthy & Hygienic?

Posted by Alison Henry on November 28th, 2017

In the absence of proper maintenance and care, a refreshing pool can become a breeding ground for pathogens, bacterial and algae. Therefore, it is important to maintain a cleaning regime to keep the water clean, hygienic and sparkling.

It can be achieved through a variety of steps. Let us get to know about some of them.

The filtration system

Getting a good filtration system installed is the first step towards clean pool water. A filtration system removes any undissolved dirt and debris from swimming pool water. Though skimmer basket plays a major role in eliminating the debris out of the pool water, filter system works on smaller debris.

There are three major types of filter system available.

  • Sand filters – Sand filters are efficient in cleaning slightly dirty water. However, when the pressure inside the filter rises, as indicated by the pressure gauge, they need to be backwashed. Sand filters require being cleaned a minimum every season with a filter cleaner.
  • Cartridge filters – Cartridge filters have a more available area to filter water than sand ones. They are similar to water filters used under the sink. Cartridge filters are designed to run at lower pressure than sand and puts less back pressure on the pump to get more flow.
  • DE filters - DE filters use Diatomaceous earth that is fossilized exoskeletons of tiny diatoms. They are used to coat girds in filter housing which function as tiny sieves to eliminate debris. Advanced versions of DE filters, like pentair pool filters cartridges, are effective even in removing a dirt particle of 5 microns.

Chemical floater

Apart from filtration system, chemical treatments are another option to keep the pool water clean. The most common chemical is obviously chlorine which is used to keep the water hygienic. Chlorine can be applied in a pool through chemical floater which maintains optimum chlorine levels over several days by just adjusting its release dial. Depending on the setting, the floater consistently releases the chlorine tablets into the pool water. It is a good way to keep your pool maintained if you are home away for a period.

Algaecide

Algae are the most common enemy of pool owners. If left unchecked, this unpleasant, slimy, greenish thing takes no time to spread all over the pool. It can turn your pristine pool into a murky pond if not addressed. Routinely use a good algaecide to check algae build up.

By following the steps, mentioned above, you can easily keep your pool water clean and sparkling.
