THE FACE OF INTERNATIONAL RELATIONS IN 1920s ? AN OVERVIEW

Every war is fought for peace. This is always held true for every war. Powers used to think that any unrest in the region can be curbed by imposing war. Why, just to bring peace to the unrest. This created anarchy in most of the world. After the end of the famous World War I when millions of people have lost their lives and a lot of blood was shed, peace treaties were signed. In the war, Allied Powers came victorious over the Central Powers. The “Big Four” played a major role in controlling these treaties i.e. France, USA, UK and Italy. The setting of peace terms with the defeated nations was held in Paris, better known as Paris Peace Conference or Versailles Peace Conference.

There were five treaties prepared in total at the conference. These Were:

1) The Treaty of Versailles signed on 28th June, 1919 with Germany.

2) The Treaty of Saint – Germain signed on 10th September, 1919 with Austria.

3) The Treaty of Neuilly signed on 27th November, 1919 with Bulgaria.

4) The Treaty of Trianon signed on 4th June, 1920 with Hungary.

5) The Treaty of Sevres signed on 10th August 1920. It was revised by the Treaty of Lausanne signed on 24th July 1923 with the Ottoman Empire or the Republic of Turkey.

International Relations in 1920s:

The political structure of Europe was changed by the impact of World War I. The main interactions which shaped the world history were the diplomatic and economic relations among different nations of the world. The first interaction was the resolution of the war issues such as the reparations to be settled with Germany. America was deeply involved with the financial projects of Europe. The League of Nations failed. International trade and commerce collapsed. All these interactions changed the way the world behaved.

The early 1920s saw few wars also. These were Russian Civil War (1917 – 22), the Polish – Soviet War (1919 – 21), the Greco – Turkish War (1919 – 22) and some domestic wars in Ireland. These subsided completely in 1922 and did not threaten world peace afterwards.

The major reason for the failure of the League of Nations was the non-participation of big leaders of the world like USA, Germany, Soviet Union and Japan. The League lost its powers due to this. It did not have any effect on the invading nations like Japan and Italy. Every nation of the world had one major issue to be resolved in the 1920s. This was the implementation of the World Peace. All foreign affairs departments of the nations of the world united on this one big issue. The implementation of peace was an idea on paper only. It never took shape in reality. Wars, invasions, unrest etc predominated time to time and greatly affected the peace process.
