Belgium is a quaint state in the Western part of Europe and has Luxembourg, Germany, Netherlands and France as its borders including being bordered by the North Sea to a certain extent. Statistically, its geographical area spreads over some 30,500 square kilometres and this place is also known to be densely populated. Population per square kilometre in Belgium is around 370. Flanders is supposedly the most densely populated area in Belgium and Ardennes is the least populated area. Most of its population are people who speak either the French language or the Dutch. Belgium is home to three communities. They are the Flemish community (those who speak Dutch), The French speaking community who occupy most of the Wallonia region and a small part of this region is also home to a percentage of German speakers. Belgium has also participated in the Industrial Revolution (industrialisation or mechanisation of traditional manufacturing methods and practices). Belgium also serves as the headquarters of NATO (North Atlantic Treaty Organisation which is a community or group of states that come together for mutual defence in case of attacks from external sources). Belgium also boasts of having a High Income Economy and is also part of the Schengen area which is a group of European states that do not require a passport for travel within their boundaries.

BELGIUM – GEOGRAPHICAL TERRAIN:

The geographical terrain of this place is diverse. It comprises of the coastal plain in the northwestern region mostly comprising of sand dunes and low-lying areas of land surrounded by ridges, the central plateau and the Ardennes uplands, which mostly consists of dense forests, hills and ridges formed due to the mountain chain. This terrain is very rough and was once considered by the state as impenetrable.

BELGIUM – POLITICAL OUTLOOK:

Belgium has a complex and comprehensive political scenario. It is a federal parliamentary democracy, which also includes a senate and a chamber of representatives. It also boasts of having a royal family that appoints the Prime Minister. The council of Ministers that forms the federal government is formed in such a way that there are equal numbers of both the major communities – both Dutch speaking and French speaking, in the cabinet. A detailed study of its political culture proves to be an interesting read. Belgium has a strong Economy and is reputed to be one of the first among nations to embrace Industrial Revolution.

BELGIUM – CUISINE:

Belgium is world known for its famous and mouth-watering chocolates. It also boasts of serving the best waffles, French fries and beer. Belgium supposedly manufactures over thousand types of beer. The famous brands of chocolates like Godiva, Pralines etc. originated in Belgium. Belgian cuisine is world famous and a person with travel in his blood must surely visit this beautiful place.
