If you’re in to your golf, you will be pleased to know that London has a lot going on for golfers. There are plenty of courses in and around the London area, so if you are staying in the city on business or for a break, you can book in to any one of these courses and play a few rounds.

Here’s a few you might be interested in:

Fulwell Golf Club Wellington Road, Hampton Hill

Fulwell Golf Club in Middlesex, near London is a private members parkland golf course suitable for societies and corporate & Society golf days. Fulwell Golf Club provides a flat, par 71, 6,446-yard parkland course two miles from Twickenham rugby stadium.

Address: Wellington Road, Twickenham, Hampton Hill TW12 1JY

Royal Wimbledon Golf Club 29 Camp Road, London

This is the third oldest golf Club in England - dating back to 1865. This course provides a tough test over tight fairways with gorse and heather thrown in for good measure. It is only five miles from Charing Cross. If you are staying in London, such as The Marble Arch By Montcalm London, you’ll find this in good proximity of everything in the local area.

Other hotels near chiswell street London would also be an ideal base.

The Addington Golf Club 205 Shirley Church Road, Croydon

The Addington offers real privacy but is very close to London (you can see the Shard from the course!) It was designed by J F Abercrombie in 1914. It now measures 6,338 yards, par 71, and features six par threes. The Addington is a fine course which will challenge and excite golfers of all abilities.

Coombe Hill Golf Club Drive, Kingston upon Thames

Coombe Hill was opened less than half an hour from the centre of London, in 1911. You’ll find fast, sloping greens, often high above the narrow fairways, on the 6,401-yard par-71 course. Their website says, “Coombe Hill Golf Club welcomes visitors from all over the world to enjoy in the delight of meeting the challenges of one of England’s most highly rated and traditional courses.”

Woldingham Golf Club Halliloo Valley Road, Woldingham

Only a short drive from London, and nestled in the Halliloo Valley north of Woldingham, Woldingham Golf Club’s excellent course and facilities have become a popular destination for golfers. It was designed by American course architect Bradford Benz and is a rolling par 71 course in excess of 6,000 yards long from the yellow tees. The course is also built on a chalk base, which is great for drainage and allows year round play.

St George's Hill Golf Club, Golf Club Road, Weybridge, Surrey

St George's Hill remains popular with golfers all over the world, especially those that come from abroad. Each hole, of which there are three loops of nine, is memorable and unique. It has been suggested that St George’s Hill is Colt’s masterpiece of all the golf courses he designed in his time. This one was built in 1912 and has a rich history.

The London Golf Club Stansted Lane, Ash, Sevenoaks

Two courses here include the Heritage and the International. The first is a classic Jack Nicklaus course, which forces you to consider every move you make in your game. You’ll also find dramatic tee shots. This course is host to the 2008 & 2009 European Open, so the course is maintained to the very best standards all-year round. The International is  known as one of the finest downland courses in Europe. You’ll find dramatic tee shots over water and great views at every level. This course is home to the 2014 Volvo World Match Play Championship, and The International recently hosted both Regional Open Qualifying and European Tour Qualifying School.

Preparing for an afternoon of golf

When you are staying in London, you’ll want to schedule out a whole day to your golf game. Time can quickly get away with you when you are enjoying yourself in one of the golf courses mentioned here. You don’t want to be clock watching while you are there, especially if it is a nice day!

You’ll also want to be prepared and wear the right clothes and shoes, but don’t worry, if you have travelled from afar and don’t have your golf clubs you can hire them at most of the golf clubs on site. In the UK, the golf dress code is generally:

  • Shirts - preferably be tucked into tailored, smart trousers or shorts
  • Footwear specifically designed for playing golf
  • Sports socks
  • Head-wear worn as it is designed to be worn, e.g. hat round the right way

What is not acceptable:

  • T-shirts,
  • Vests,
  • denim clothing,
  • track-suits,
  • football shirts and rugby shirts
  • beach-wear
  • Trainers
  • Golf shoes without socks
  • Cargo/combat trousers/shorts and trousers with drawstring waist

If you are staying at The Montcalm Luxury hotels collection, you’ll be able to ensure your gold clubs stay safe by asking one of the staff to keep them in their storage room for you. You could also have them moved to your room where they could stay until you are ready to play.

Wherever you decide to golf this winter, make sure you explore one of the many golf clubs and courses that London has to offer. Booking in advance is advisable so that you don’t turn up disappointed that the course is at full capacity. This is especially true if there is a large group of you wanting to play together.
