What is Gynecomastia?
Gynecomastia is a condition in men where the breast muscles and tissues swell up and become abnormally big. Every human being has breast muscles however, these are under developed in males as compared to females due to the hormone levels. This type of breast enlargement mostly occurs in boys hitting puberty and slows down once they’ve reached adulthood. In some men, this breast swelling comes back in their old age. This condition is caused by additional breast tissue and not by extra body fat or obesity. A separate condition called pseudogynecomastia also occurs in certain men where fat muscles build up around the breast area due to obesity.

Causes of Gynecomastia
Gynecomastia occurs in the male body due to the sex hormone imbalance. The estrogen hormone encourages the growth of the breast tissues while the testosterone discourages this growth. The estrogen hormone is very high in females and testosterone is very high in males.

Younger boys have excessive breast tissues growing up but as they hit puberty and the testosterone increases in the body, these tissues reduce. As they grow older, the testosterone levels keep reducing in the body and the male breasts start to show.

Other causes include excessive medications, consumption of steroids, certain heart medicines, thyroid, alcoholism, chemotherapy etc.

Gynecomastia Surgery
The male breast reduction surgery has quickly become very popular in India. This is mainly because there are no over the counter drugs or medicines available to treat this condition. No amount of exercise and weight lifting helps in the reduction of these breast tissues.  A liposuction and/or excision surgery is done on the person suffering from gynecomastia to remove the excessive tissues. While picking a clinic for the surgery it is important to do a thorough research to pick the best gynecomastia clinic India for the best treatment.

The best male breast surgeon extracts the excess tissues through small incisions made on the sides of the chest along the edges of the areola or within the area of the armpits. The tiny liposuction tube of 3-4 millimeters thickness is inserted into these incisions to suck out the tissues.

This is a one-time surgery and does not require multiple visits or sessions. The patient recovers completely within 6 weeks of the surgery.

Post-Surgery Care
The recovery period is generally 5-7 weeks from surgery. Immediately after surgery, the patient will notice bruising and swelling of the breast area which is the body’s normal healing process. Some patients are given a compression garment to ensure there is no excessive swelling. Vigorous exercise and weight lifting needs to be avoided for at least 6 weeks however, you can resume normal work and social life within 3-4 days of surgery.
